The Dimming of Our Light: Where our true self resides.

I'm going to begin this post with a quote:
“Your identity is a mirror covered with dust. When you first look in the mirror, the truth of who you are and what you value is obscured. Clearing it may not be pleasant, but only when that dust is gone can you see your true reflection.” Attributed to Gauranga Das, in Jay Shetty’s book Think Like a Monk.
I learned something similar to this in my Reiki studies of Mikao Usui. In these readings, our True Self was likened to a lamp whose bright light had been covered over by layers and layers of lampshades until our light was zapped out…don't misunderstand this, the light was still there, we just couldn’t see it. And that’s what I mean when I say we are in search of RE-discovering our True Selves, because it has never left us…it is our essence…the beauty of our soul…the universe…God…the Infinite…bringing us back to realize we are an infinite as we ARE one with the Infinite (whether you call that infinite God, the universe, soul, etc…)
So, what’s the deal with the shades? It’s actually a metaphor for the social conditioning we’ve received from birth. At birth our light, our True Self, was shining brightly, unencumbered by judgements, concepts, or the darkness of duality (the shades). Over the years, through our parents, teacher, society, politics, rules, we learn there is a right/wrong way of doing things. We learn that there is good and evil, that people/situations are to be judged. Eventually, we become “separated” from the Infinite and our light becomes harder and harder to see. It is still there, shining brightly, but dimmed by layers of conditioning.
As we go on our path to rediscovery of this beautiful core of our being, the lessons we learn slowly begin helping us remove these shades…(or dust off a mirror)…, and our bright light begins to glimmer out from the darkness.
In effect, we are learning the difference between duality (accepting there is a right/wrong, good/evil), which causes us to see ourselves as individuals who are separate from others, removed from the Infinite; and non-duality, our true self, understanding we have never been separate from the Infinite, and that our most beautiful quality is our inherent happiness for self and all things. We live in this “essence” without fears, judgements, or concepts.
That’s our True Self. And once we discover that, we recognize what our true purpose is in this world. I believe our purpose is in some way being of service to others, but my journey is just beginning so that might not be the purpose for everyone.
I know what you’re thinking…”wow…no judgement, no fears, no concepts, sounds alien and a bit boring,” right? That's your monkey-mind, the ego, talking from fear of losing identity. But, just for a minute consider the immaculate trust you’d have in yourself and the feeling of knowing you are supported by the Infinite. Living intuitively from the Infinite, and having the natural sense of happiness that lives within you each and every day. If you felt that way, what could you accomplish in this lifetime?
Think about it. That’s what this journey is all about. To reach our greatest awakening and awareness of the “more” we have to offer.
