To have compassion for others you must first practice compassion with yourself. It's difficult to do when so many of us live in the past, chastising ourselves for what we did wrong or how we acted poorly. It takes courage to face ourselves and show compassion to our past actions. We did the best we could based on what we knew then. We've grown from them.
